Coburgerstreet Lichtenfels

Urban Development Stage:
With the transformation of the Coburg Road, Lichtenfels begins another stage of its urban redevelopment. The area around the market streets and squares has already been upgraded to a high standard. Continuing to address questions within the design thread, this project can be seen, not as a "new beginning" but rather as an extension of an already successful redevelopment project.

In order to unify the urban design, construction materials are continued along the Coburg Road out of town. The roadway is asphalt bordered on both sides by gullies of large granite paving. Another line of paving creates a sloped Homburger edge giving wheelchair friendly access from the adjacent sidewalks. This will be made of granite, which will extend to the edges of the walkway. The walkway widens at the Badstraße and at the junction of Mainau, where smaller spaces are accentuated by solitary trees.

Underpass:
Space and transparency for all road users! The reconstruction of the railway underpass leads to a simplification of the urban space and for vehicular traffic. The road is tapered in favor of wide sidewalks. Traffic is now directed by a two way signal. In addition, changes in the road surface, from asphalt to natural stone paving between the two parking areas, help reduce the speed and increase the attention of the driver.

North of the underpass the wall cheeks will be ommitted on boths sides. The height level at Mühlgasse, can be overcome by incoporating a staircase, whose steps meet the rising road. On the opposite side, the footpath offers a connection to the development area at Wöhrdstraße.

The tunnel structure will mark the entrance to a new shopping area for the city. The wall and ceiling of the underpass will be covered with a steel mesh, reflecting long lines of light, along with a new dictional sinage and the design of new street furniture.
