City Usable Space
As the central square of the town, the upper market, is designed as an open, universally usable urban space. Since ancient times, it has functioned as a place for everyday living, the changes here serve to keep the particular hustle and bustle of this area alive. The division of the court space into a surrounding frame, its association with the subsequent urban spaces, including an inner core, creates a clear structure for this area.

Within the surrounding structure of the space, is the central square area and the accompanying rows of featured trees. To complement the changes, the focus on transportation and events is concentrated in this area, while the surrounding buildings frame the space and create a pre- zone. Here, shops and restaurants can be incoporated and the functions of everyday life continues. The church itself is to remain untouched but is a visible and tangible part of the space. The redesign of the church ground as an connection point, accessed by means of stairs / ramp, acts as an open invitation to visit the building.

Trees represent the lateral boundary of the central square without separating it. Linden trees run along paved routes, sheltering a place of peace, a place not just to linger but to play. Components such as bus stops and other facilities are integrated along the tree lines. The historic fountain gets its original positioning back, below the tree canopy on the west side of the square. Modular seating allows for changeable compositions, so giving options to alter the image of the place.

The design draws on proven and sustainable materials, with the use of a robust European natural stone, typical regional color combinations and large cut paving stones, the draft provide a sustainable investment for the future. In the rows forming the robust and user-friendly surface of the upper market, the selected mixture of the three different granites. along with the proposed layout, a constant width of 15 cm and varying lengths of between 20 and 30cm, create an animated space without being the foreground feature.
